We're starting to see some of the future Oscar nominees, like The Sessions, which is sure to nab at least a Best Actor nomination, if not Best Picture and several others. It's easygoing and nice to watch, but I wouldn't swap it for a couple of more daring art house movies, Andrea Arnold's Wuthering Heights and Leos Carax's Holy Motors, neither of which will score a single nomination. The other big release this week is Paranormal Activity 4, which shows that once-interesting series finally running out of steam. On video we have the best thing of all: Max Ophuls' Letter from an Unknown Woman, which is one of the all-time great American movies, and has never been released on DVD in the United States until now (there's also a Blu-ray). If you love movies, don't miss it. Next week The Sessions opens in San Francisco and other cities; please look for my interview with director Ben Lewin and stars John Hawkes and Helen Hunt in the S.F. Examiner. Also next week is the epic Cloud Atlas. Until then!
