My Top 100 Films of the 1980s

Another list! This one comes in response to a reader who wanted to know more about the 1980s, a decade he viewed as a cultural wasteland. To some degree, he's right, but I still came up with 100 terrific films (and many more that were eliminated). I made this list rather quickly, with the help of my personal votes on the IMDB, and then sorted according to the whim of the moment. I allowed more than one film per director, but in many cases, have allowed a single film of a director to represent the rest of their output. In other words, definitely check out other works by the directors listed here. I also tried to mix in comedies and genre films with the usual arthouse favorites. By no means did I actually see all of these films during the 1980s, so the list is a combination of things I've seen since, and sentimental favorites from the day. Finally, some of my original star ratings may not reflect the choices on this list (they're not all four-star reviews), but this list is chosen in retrospect, after much more reflection. (Also, some movies I have seen but have not yet reviewed, because I have only been a critic since 1997, and any reviews of 1980s movies were done for either my own pleasure or for DVD releases.) Enjoy!
